The epic battle continues between Tom (the cat) and Jerry (the little mouse), this time in a movie based on the well-known cartoon series. After the two’s most recent battle, Jerry decides to hide in the famous Royal Gate Hotel, hoping to begin a new life. Naturally, Tom continues to try and attack Jerry.
Within the hotel, we are introduced to Kayla (Chloe Grace Moretz), who lies about her past to get a premium job within the hotel. While Kayla tries to be confident in the job, she soon finds herself in charge of one of the most significant weddings the hotel has ever seen. Along with this, she has been tasked with removing the hotel’s most recent and unwelcome guest- Jerry. Perhaps Kayla will get help from Tom; after all, he is a cat.
Growing up, I never watched many Tom & Jerry cartoons, but I was familiar with the characters and their history in animation. Thankfully, this film is a solid update to the characters many have followed for years. The movie is loaded with many animated characters and manages to sneak in Easter eggs relating to other Warner Brothers properties. The animation is solid, and the film presentation is neat. Whenever the main characters interacted with the animated animals, it’s done relatively well, and I could not fault it. Performances from actors Michael Pena and Ken Jeong were also pleasing, and clearly, they enjoyed themselves in the film.
While this is a positive film for the Tom and Jerry characters themselves, there are few issues with this movie. The leading character of Kayla is not overly exciting to follow. She spends most of the film trying to make up lies and covering her identity while being overconfident even when she fumbles around. The film’s runtime is also questionable and something to point out, considering it is a family film. I found the third act hard to swallow, mainly due to the many subplots. As a family film, I wished the movie did not try to juggle so many things at once, making it feel slightly cramped by the ending. Some jokes are also repeated throughout the film. Some of these jokes never worked for me, including a girl who works in the hotel known for creeping people out due to her appearance.
Overall, Tom and Jerry is a fun family film that I am sure many will enjoy. Those who have loved and followed the characters for many years will find it a solid update, and it contains fantastic animation for all ages to enjoy. While the characters and animation are certainly an improvement, the film is not perfect. This primarily relates to the leading character and the lengthy runtime. This runtime is due to many subplots which get more screen time than a family movie deserves. Nevertheless, I found more enjoyment in the film than I expected.
