Shy but talented mechanical mastermind Malcolm (Colin Friels) lives in Melbourne, Australia and works with trams (his favourite things to be around). But when Malcolm is fired for building his very own tram, he’s not sure what he’ll do next. Jobless and with little cash remaining, Malcolm is a bit lost in life.
Thankfully, a knock on the door from a stranger named Frank (John Hargreaves) asking about a room to rent will change everything in Malcolm’s life. You see, Frank has just been released out of prison and is loaded with money to pay Malcolm for a room, even offering to help with the bills. But it’s not long until Frank starts teaching Malcolm what the world of crime is all about. Soon, Malcolm finds a new life of crime with the help of some of his inventions along the way. Eventually, Malcolm will even attempt to pull off one of the biggest heists of Australian history.

Malcolm is an Australian movie that was filmed and shot in Melbourne, Victoria. From the start of the film, there is a wonderful sense of creativity thanks to the performance from Colin Friels as Malcolm. Malcolm has many fun moments and is generally likeable with his shy personality. Watching this kind and innocent man enter a world of crime and robberies was entertaining and came with many unexpected moments. Malcolm’s creations and general passion for trams and making new inventions added to this fun.

Thanks to Australian distributor Umbrella Entertainment, Malcolm (1986) has been released with an all-new 4K restoration on Blu-ray. The new release is stacked with bonus features, including featurettes, audio commentaries, interviews, and so much more.

Overall, this is truly a fun film with pleasing elements of both charm and creativity. As an Australian film, I can understand why so many people love it, and I’m surprised at how well this film still holds up. The performance of Colin Friels as Malcolm is brilliant and unforgettable.
