The Current War follows the lives of three men who changed the world forever by introducing electrical inventions. The men I am referring to are Thomas Edison (Benedict Cumberbatch), George Westinghouse (Michael Shannon) & Nikola Tesla (Nicholas Hoult).
In case you’re not familiar with the plot of this film, this movie is based on a true story and is in fact quite a dramatic story. As one man creates an invention which may seem revolutionary at the time, isn’t enjoyed for long before another person discovers a better way of doing it. During this story, there are many moments where our leading characters invent the same type of product and outdo each other with new creations that are more beneficial, safer and last longer when it comes to powering the entire world. Naturally, there are time where conflict between them occur, and the question is how far is one man willing to go to either prove a point or be on top.
The Current War is filled out with tremendous performances. Benedict Cumberbatch as always is outstanding in the film and is pleasing as Thomas Edison. For me, the surprising standouts when it came to performances onscreen were actors Michael Shannon and Nicholas Hoult. Supporting cast including Tom Holland were also enjoyable during key moments, particularly when having deep lines of dialogue. He was also fantastic whenever he shared the screen with actor Benedict Cumberbatch.
The script for this film was brilliant, and I felt this element stood out as a key strength. When actors are delivering dialogue it never felt boring or uninteresting. There are also many times where we see characters at weak moments and the expressions used are quite powerful.
As for the pacing, I will admit the film did take a little while to get going for me, but once the lead characters are introduced, and they begin to deal with a number of challenges, the film had my entire investment until the end. It also helped that I wasn’t too familiar with the actual story nor was I aware of what the outcome of this story would be.
Overall, I quite enjoyed The Current War and seeing great performances by all, with Michael Shannon and Nicholas Hoult being the standouts. The story itself is genuinely fascinating, and I found the film to be even more enjoyable after the first act passes. The film’s script and dialogue were also a major highlight for me, and I also enjoyed the movie’s positive messages.
