Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy) is a police officer in the city of Detroit. Axel is known for being loud and wild but nevertheless is a good cop and has street-smart skills when it comes to cracking cases.
After an undercover bust gone wrong, Axel heads home only to find a long-time friend of his has visited him. The two share a few good moments at the local bar, but shortly after, Axel’s friend is shot and murdered. In trying to solve his friend’s murder, Axel recalls some of the discussions they shared, and all the clues point to Beverly Hills. Axel packs his bag and ventures into a city that is quite different to Detroit. As he investigates, he begins to work with fellow Police Officers in Beverly Hills who initially don’t like Axel’s methods.
Eddie Murphy here is just brilliant. His lines of dialogue are well-timed, and no matter how many times I watch this film, he manages to make me laugh with his quick and witty one-liners. His character is also quite convincing as a Detroit cop. Action sequences in the present day do show their age ever so slightly, but they are still exciting, especially in the film’s opening, which includes a truck smashing into cars on the streets.
As a plot, Beverly Hills Cop is a simple revenge tale with comedy and action thrown into the mix. Even when Axel makes discoveries in his case, he still has to deal with several issues in his path. All of these things only make the plot more engaging. Another element that I also love is the film’s soundtrack. Thanks to a recent release on 4K UHD, this film sounded the best I have heard it. The film’s villain is certainly a weaker element. While he comes across as creepy and threatening, I did not find myself as concerned or afraid as I probably intended.
Overall, I absolutely love Beverly Hills Cop. It’s a fun action-comedy where actor Eddie Murphy brings one of his funniest characters to life. As a plot, it’s also quite a brainless revenge tale, but thanks to a number of challenges for our lead, it’s quite fun and engaging. The film’s soundtrack is also a blast. Beverly Hills Cop is a great time and comes highly recommended!
